A factory can introduce a new supplier for an otherwise familiar part. The inspection image now has a different texture or marking, and the model flags more cases without a corresponding change in real defects.
Record the input conditions
Track relevant material, camera, lighting and process conditions alongside the evaluation data. These attributes help distinguish a model limitation from a real quality issue.
Datasheets for Datasets recommends documenting dataset composition and collection. For a factory application, supplier and production context may be material parts of that description.
This is an illustrative operating scenario, not a claim about any named manufacturer or model.
Review changes before full rollout
Evaluate representative authorised samples from the new condition using appropriate quality experts. Compare the error types that matter to the production decision.
Do not assume that a high score on the original test set establishes suitability for the new material. Equally, do not treat every change in model output as proof that the supplier’s quality has worsened.
Define a controlled manual or alternative inspection route while uncertainty is investigated. Safety and product-release decisions require the appropriate qualified process.
Connect purchasing with model ownership
Give the teams changing suppliers or production settings a way to notify the people maintaining the inspection system. Otherwise a routine business change can become an unexplained AI incident.
Include notification of material production changes in the model-maintenance process. The person choosing a new supplier or changing lighting may not think of the action as an AI release. A simple route to the evaluation owner can preserve that connection without making every routine purchasing decision a software-engineering task.
GAT’s deep-tech commercialisation guide considers performance in actual operating conditions. Vision systems need continuing attention to those conditions, because the deployed environment can change even when the software remains untouched.
