An agent submits a change, receives no confirmation and tries again. The first request may already have succeeded. Without a stable operation identity, the second attempt can create another record or repeat an external action.

Identify the operation before execution

Stripe’s idempotency documentation describes using keys to support safe retries within its API semantics. Other systems require their own verified approach; the label “idempotent” should not be assumed to apply automatically.

An illustrative sales agent creating a customer record should retain the intended operation identifier across a network retry. A new business request should remain distinguishable from that retry.

Check which endpoints support the mechanism and how long relevant records remain available. Do not generalise one provider’s behaviour to every connected tool.

Reconcile uncertain outcomes

When confirmation is missing, query the external state through an authorised route before repeating a consequential action. Preserve the relationship between the request and any resulting record.

The model should not decide transaction identity from a fresh interpretation of the conversation on each attempt. Use application controls that remain stable outside the generated response.

Define an escalation when the state cannot be established safely.

Test interrupted execution

Simulate appropriate timeouts and duplicate deliveries in a test environment. Check business records as well as logs showing that the workflow ran.

Keep an operation ledger that can distinguish the business request from the individual attempts used to complete it. The ledger should survive an application restart where the workflow requires continuity. This gives recovery logic a dependable reference instead of asking the model to infer whether a similar request has already succeeded.

GAT’s enterprise pilot guidance asks whether AI can be deployed reliably. Retry testing addresses a specific requirement: recovering from uncertainty should not create another customer problem that the system then confidently describes as success.
