A generated response can attach a relevant-looking document to a statement that the document never makes. Readers may give the answer more trust precisely because a link is visible.
Evaluate the claim and passage together
Break material assertions into checkable units and locate the supporting passage. Ask whether the source supports the wording, scope and date of the statement.
AWS’s retrieval-and-generation documentation describes source-linked knowledge-base responses. The existence of that capability does not remove the need to evaluate the relationship between answer and evidence.
An illustrative assistant may cite a general travel policy while stating a specific reimbursement limit absent from that document. The link is relevant to the topic but insufficient for the amount claimed.
Check omissions as well as fabrication
A passage may support part of an answer while containing an exception the answer omits. Evaluate whether the response preserves conditions that change the meaning.
Where multiple sources conflict, the application should not resolve the disagreement silently. It should identify the relevant authority or request clarification through an agreed route.
Keep citation checks distinct from factual checks based on outside knowledge. A statement can be true but unsupported by the citation it displays.
Make review practical for readers
Link as directly as the system supports and show enough context for inspection. Avoid presenting a large document as though it automatically validates every sentence in the response.
When checking a citation, ask whether removing the source’s qualification would change the decision a reader makes. If so, preserve that qualification in the answer or narrow the claim. A citation review should protect meaning rather than merely confirm that the page contains several of the same keywords.
This discipline also serves GAT’s AI-first distribution coverage. Useful citation design is about attributable evidence, not merely making content appear well sourced to a reader or an answer engine.
