A team can lower a classification threshold to find more possible exceptions. The resulting queue may exceed the reviewers’ capacity, delaying the very cases the system was intended to prioritise.

Separate prediction from action

Scikit-learn’s threshold guidance distinguishes estimating probabilities from deciding what action to take. A business threshold belongs to the second problem.

Define the available actions: automatic processing, human review or a request for more information. The score need not lead to a single binary outcome if the workflow supports a more useful arrangement.

An illustrative invoice application could route uncertain coding suggestions to review while leaving high-consequence payment changes outside automatic execution altogether.

Replay the resulting workload

Use an authorised representative dataset to estimate the queue at candidate thresholds. Include handling time, arrival patterns and the effect of unresolved cases.

These are planning estimates, not guarantees of live performance. Review whether the evaluation population resembles the deployment and whether workload has changed.

Do not solve insufficient capacity by silently removing difficult cases from the reported result. If the service cannot support the chosen operating point, the deployment decision needs to reflect that limit.

Review the threshold after launch

Monitor both errors and queue behaviour. A threshold that worked at low volume may become unsuitable as the mix of requests changes.

Assign authority for changing it and require a record of the evidence. Otherwise different teams may alter the boundary to improve their own metric while increasing burden elsewhere.

Keep threshold changes in a configuration record with the evaluation basis and intended workload effect. Compare the expected and observed queue after release. This makes it possible to identify whether a later backlog came from changing request volumes, a new operating point or a problem elsewhere in the process.

The useful threshold is the one the organisation can explain and operate. A mathematically attractive score is only one input to that decision.
