Research-driven ventures often need financing before a deployable product exists. Receiving that support is meaningful, but the evidence it supplies differs from a purchase, operational deployment or repeat order.
Explain the purpose of the funding
State what uncertainty the funded work is intended to reduce. Avoid treating the award amount as evidence of market demand.
NSF’s I-Corps description emphasises customer discovery for research commercialisation. Its US programme is not an eligibility recommendation for APAC founders; it illustrates the distinction between technical work and market learning.
An illustrative materials venture could use funding to test a production process while separately investigating whether a buyer accepts the resulting specification and price.
Maintain different milestone records
Track technical results, funding and customer commitments in distinct categories. A planned trial, completed trial and paid deployment should not collapse into one “traction” label.
Explain dependencies. A grant may make a field test possible, and that test may support procurement. Readers need to see the sequence rather than infer that the final commercial step has already occurred.
Obtain appropriate advice on grant conditions and permitted use instead of assuming funding is interchangeable with unrestricted working capital.
Use the next milestone to guide reporting
Identify what a buyer still needs to decide and how the current work contributes. This makes progress understandable without understating the value of research.
Describe the next customer commitment that would materially reduce uncertainty, without claiming it is guaranteed to follow the grant. That might be access to a test site, agreed evaluation conditions or a purchase review. Linking funding to a specific evidence-producing activity gives the venture narrative a more defensible sequence.
GAT’s deep-tech first-customer guide addresses the same commercial transition. A credible venture story explains what each achievement proves, what it does not prove and why the next activity brings the product closer to a usable customer outcome.
