An application can display an impressive interface while giving a first-time user no indication of where the numbers will come from. Founders should examine whether the empty state helps the customer begin or merely advertises features.

Distinguish absence from failure

“No records yet” is different from “connection unavailable” and “you do not have permission.” The interface should not collapse these conditions into the same blank chart.

W3C’s user-notification tutorial connects feedback to the result of a user action. A startup can apply that principle by showing the actual state and the action relevant to it.

For an illustrative sales application, the correct next step may be importing accounts rather than inviting colleagues. A generic checklist that requests everything at once can obscure that dependency.

Use examples without implying real results

Sample data can explain a product, but label it clearly and provide a straightforward route back to the customer’s own workspace. Demonstration revenue or performance figures must not look like actual account results.

Show what one completed workflow would look like. The objective is comprehension, not a simulation so polished that users cannot distinguish it from a live system.

If several roles use the product, test whether the first screen makes sense for each. An administrator may need configuration controls while an invited operator needs a specific task.

Evaluate the first session through observation

Watch relevant users begin without coaching. Note where they hesitate, what they think the dashboard represents and whether they can identify the next step.

Avoid using time on page as the only measure. Longer time may reflect confusion rather than engagement. Ask whether the user completed the task that makes subsequent value possible.

Test the empty state for a returning customer as well as a new account. A workspace that becomes empty because a filter excludes records requires a different explanation from a workspace awaiting its first import. Treating both as onboarding can make experienced users think their information has disappeared.

The best empty state becomes unnecessary quickly. It teaches the first useful action and then gives way to evidence from the customer’s real work.
