Teams may replace a person’s name while retaining a distinctive role, event date, location and narrative. The resulting record can still point to the original person or organisation.

Define the permitted test use

Identify why real examples are needed, who may access them and what information the evaluation actually requires. Appropriate privacy and legal specialists should determine the applicable handling requirements.

NIST’s Generative AI Profile addresses generative-AI risk management, including information-related risks. It does not certify a dataset as anonymous because one transformation was applied.

An illustrative support transcript may retain enough unusual order details to identify a customer even after the name is replaced.

Review indirect identifiers and context

Examine free text, attachments, metadata and linked records as well as structured name fields. Consider whether a less detailed or appropriately constructed example can test the same behaviour.

Keep transformed records separate from production systems so they cannot accidentally trigger real communication or transactions.

Do not use a model’s assurance that data is anonymised as the only verification. The claim requires a suitable assessment of the dataset and intended access environment.

Preserve utility without overstating protection

Document changes that affect evaluation meaning. Removing every difficult detail may reduce privacy exposure while also making the test unrepresentative.

Use access restrictions and retention controls appropriate to residual risk. A transformed dataset may still need controlled handling.

Use the least detailed example that still tests the relevant behaviour, and record the resulting limitation. A heavily altered transcript may protect information but no longer represent the difficult conditions the model must handle. Privacy review and evaluation design should therefore work together rather than treat one as a final formatting step.

A responsible evaluation needs both useful examples and an honest account of their sensitivity. The term “anonymous” should not become a shortcut that ends scrutiny before the organisation has established what information remains.
