Long-running document, research or operations jobs may cross sessions and system restarts. The application should know which outputs are complete and which external actions remain pending.

Save the state needed to continue

Retain stable job identifiers, completed steps, input versions and unresolved outcomes. Separate the execution record from a human-readable progress summary.

AWS Step Functions’ error-handling guidance shows explicit control of failed workflow paths. A resumable AI application needs similarly deliberate transitions rather than an assumption that another model call can infer the previous state.

An illustrative report job may have finished source collection but not fact checking. Resumption should continue the appropriate stage rather than represent the collected material as reviewed.

Recheck conditions that may have changed

Permissions, source versions and deadlines can change while a task is paused. Determine which conditions require verification before work continues.

Do not treat an earlier approval as unlimited authority for a revised action. Preserve its scope and invalidate it when the governing conditions change.

Explain any additional work or cost required when the original plan is no longer valid.

Verify the final result once

Use the original operation identity to prevent duplicate publication or record creation. Reconcile partial outcomes before executing pending actions.

Give resumed jobs an explicit version check before continuing. If inputs changed during the pause, decide whether to preserve the original scope, restart affected steps or seek review. Continuing from saved state is useful only when the system knows which assumptions remain valid and which must be re-established.

GAT’s enterprise pilot guidance treats reliability as part of commercial readiness. Resumability contributes when a disrupted job can continue with its evidence, limits and responsibilities intact, rather than beginning another uncertain attempt under the same name.
