SEATCE Advances Southeast Asian Craft Preservation

SEATCE (Southeast Asian Traditional Craft Encyclopedia) continues to strengthen cultural preservation and youth engagement across the region, following its recent recognition under the YSEALI Seeds for the Future 2025 program. The grant marks an important milestone for SEATCE as it scales its mission to document, promote, and revitalize traditional crafts across Southeast Asia.

Created as a regional digital platform, SEATCE showcases traditional craft techniques while highlighting the stories and expertise of artisans. By giving artisans greater visibility and access to wider audiences and markets, the platform addresses a long-standing gap in how traditional craft knowledge is preserved and shared. SEATCE's pilot initiatives began in Brunei Darussalam and Sarawak, Malaysia, laying the foundation for broader regional expansion.

At the core of SEATCE is a structured documentation system that combines standardized research methods, digital publishing, and youth-led visual production. This approach ensures authenticity while making traditional craft knowledge accessible, engaging, and relevant to contemporary audiences. The platform serves both as a centralized reference for verified craft knowledge and as a digital showcase that elevates artisans' visibility beyond local communities.

Recently, SEATCE organized a Regional Traditional Craft Workshop in Brunei, bringing together artisans, cultural practitioners, and youth participants from across Southeast Asia. The workshop focused on hands-on learning, cross-border knowledge exchange, and discussions on sustaining craft traditions in a modern context. Participants explored diverse craft practices, reinforcing the idea that traditional crafts are living expressions of cultural identity rather than static heritage artifacts.

Youth engagement was further amplified through the SEATCE Youth Video Contest, which invited young creators to document traditional crafts through creative storytelling. The contest empowered youth to become active contributors to cultural preservation, using digital media to bridge tradition and modern expression. In parallel, SEATCE also conducted a Youth Workshop in Brunei, equipping participants with skills in documentation, storytelling, and cultural advocacy.

Through these initiatives, SEATCE demonstrates how heritage preservation can be both structured and forward-looking, rooted in research, powered by digital platforms, and sustained by youth participation. With support from YSEALI Seeds for the Future 2025, SEATCE is well positioned to expand its impact and continue building a shared regional resource for Southeast Asia's rich and diverse craft traditions.
