Both teams may present their capabilities confidently, yet give different answers about implementation, pricing or support. The customer then has to reconcile a relationship the suppliers have not clarified themselves.
Agree the purpose before the meeting
Identify the customer problem, the roles each party will play and the next decision sought. Decide who answers commercial, technical and local-delivery questions.
JETRO’s business-support information describes assistance for foreign companies entering Japan. Support infrastructure can help a market entrant, but the startup still needs to define responsibilities in its own partnerships.
An illustrative software vendor and implementation partner might agree that the vendor explains product limits while the partner describes local deployment work. Neither should make commitments on behalf of the other without authority.
Listen for inconsistent promises
Record questions that produce conflicting answers. Resolve them internally before returning to the buyer with a confirmed position.
If the customer asks about a capability neither party supplies, acknowledge the gap. A vague claim that “our ecosystem can handle it” creates a future delivery risk.
Avoid using the first meeting only to celebrate the alliance. The useful evidence concerns whether the combined offer solves a buying problem more clearly than either party alone.
Review the operating result
Afterwards, compare notes on the customer’s need, agreed action and ownership. If the two teams describe different next steps, the handover remains incomplete.
After the meeting, ask each partner to write its understanding of the customer’s next decision independently. Comparing those notes can reveal divergence that a friendly debrief misses. Resolve the difference before sending follow-up material so the buyer receives one coherent account of the proposed work and its owners.
GAT’s partner-led GTM guide places partnerships within the route to market. A joint meeting is an early test of that route: it should leave the customer with a coherent offer and both partners with a shared account of what happens next.
