A supportive manager arranges demonstrations and introduces colleagues. Then the manager changes roles. The startup discovers that nobody else owns the evaluation and that its proposal exists mainly in the departing employee’s inbox.

Record the organisational decision

Identify the problem owner, budget process and people affected by implementation. Ask the champion how the organisation would continue the review if they became unavailable. This is normal planning, not a request to undermine the relationship.

GitHub Projects documentation illustrates how work can retain owners and status. A sales team needs the same clarity around the customer’s decision, regardless of its CRM.

An illustrative regional SaaS opportunity may depend on operations for adoption and finance for approval. Knowing only the innovation manager leaves two important decisions unexamined.

Make the evidence portable

Prepare a short account of the agreed problem, evaluation results and remaining questions. Confirm that it reflects the customer’s understanding before asking them to circulate it.

Avoid relying on personal messages that cannot be shared internally. A decision record should explain the business case without requiring the champion to reproduce every meeting.

If personnel change, ask the new owner what remains valid. Do not assume earlier enthusiasm transfers automatically or that the new contact has accepted the same priorities.

Requalify without restarting blindly

Review budget, timing and the current workflow. Preserve useful evidence but allow the customer’s circumstances to have changed.

Build a transition brief that the departing champion can correct without doing unpaid selling work. It should explain the established problem and current evaluation, not pressure the person to secure a purchase before leaving. A respectful handover protects the relationship while testing whether the opportunity has organisational support.

GAT’s enterprise pilot-to-revenue guide makes the purchase path explicit. A resilient opportunity has more than one enthusiastic contact: it has an identifiable decision the organisation knows how to continue.
