Founders travelling to an APAC market may schedule investors, potential partners and prospective customers in the same week. Each conversation can be useful, but they do not provide interchangeable evidence of demand.

Assign a question to each meeting

A customer discussion can test a workflow. A partner conversation can test delivery capacity. An ecosystem meeting may explain access routes. Record the role each plays before interpreting the trip’s result.

GOV.UK’s discovery guidance centres investigation on the problem. A founder’s visit should similarly be organised around uncertainties rather than a target number of introductions.

An illustrative Japan visit might prioritise observing how a buyer evaluates implementation support. Ten general networking conversations would not answer that question as directly.

Capture evidence while preserving context

After each meeting, record what was confirmed, who could verify it and what remained an interpretation. Ask permission before using names or quotations publicly.

Include disconfirming conversations. A trip report that omits unsuitable buyers can overstate market readiness and encourage premature hiring.

Do not confuse hospitality or interest in international collaboration with an intention to buy. The next step should reveal whether the discussion leads to relevant work.

End with a bounded decision

Compare findings with the questions set before departure. Decide which assumption is stronger, which is weaker and what further evidence is required.

Reserve time during the visit to review conflicting findings rather than fill every hour with another introduction. A useful follow-up may be a second conversation that resolves one uncertainty. The value of the trip should be assessed through improved decisions, not only the number or seniority of people met.

GAT’s Japan testing guide describes staged validation. A market visit contributes when it changes the next stage: a narrower segment, a revised support plan or a credible reason to stop before the company adds fixed cost.
