A messaging trial runs for several weeks. Results are unclear, the team becomes busy and the test disappears. Months later, another colleague proposes almost the same experiment.

Record the hypothesis and exposure

State what changed, who encountered it and which result would inform the decision. Preserve material differences between groups or periods.

GOV.UK’s alpha-phase guidance uses experimentation to decide what deserves further development. A startup should apply the same expectation of a decision rather than treat activity as the output.

An illustrative landing-page test may fail to produce enough relevant enquiries to compare messages. That is an inconclusive result, not proof that both messages work equally well.

Explain what the result cannot establish

Low exposure, unsuitable participants or simultaneous product changes may limit interpretation. Identify those conditions without using them automatically to dismiss an unfavourable result.

The owner should recommend whether to stop, revise or repeat, with a reason. Repetition is worthwhile only when the next design can answer something the previous one could not.

Keep any customer or commercial commitments separate from the experiment’s completion. A team should not leave users in a test state indefinitely because the analysis stalled.

Make the learning findable

Store a short record with the result and next decision. Link it to the relevant product or campaign task.

Include the reason for ending the experiment in the record. A test stopped for lack of exposure teaches something different from one stopped because the result was clearly unfavourable. Preserving that distinction prevents a future team from calling every unfinished experiment inconclusive or repeating one whose answer was already useful.

GAT’s go-to-market coverage emphasises coherent execution. Experiment ownership supports that coherence by preventing an inconclusive test from becoming folklore and a negative result from disappearing whenever the team changes its attention.
