Teams may compare several advanced systems and select the highest score. If the existing process or a straightforward rule performs adequately, the improvement may not justify new complexity.

Define the alternative honestly

A baseline might be the current workflow, a simple classifier or a transparent rule. Choose one relevant to the task and apply the same evaluation population.

Scikit-learn’s model-evaluation documentation provides measures for comparing predictive results. The business interpretation still depends on the alternative being credible.

For an illustrative enquiry router, a keyword rule may perform well on common requests but fail on ambiguous ones. The AI system should demonstrate where it adds value rather than claim superiority because it uses a more sophisticated method.

Compare the whole operating burden

Include review, maintenance, latency and integration alongside predictive performance. A small score improvement may be valuable in one workflow and insufficient in another.

Keep the comparison fair. Do not test the baseline on raw data while giving the AI system manually corrected inputs unless that difference reflects the intended operating process and is disclosed.

Where the baseline uses human judgment, record the conditions and assistance. A rushed manual comparison can create a misleadingly weak opponent.

Use the result to choose scope

The outcome may justify AI only for a difficult subset, with a simpler method handling routine work. That can be a stronger deployment design than forcing one approach across every case.

Retain the baseline result after choosing the AI system. It remains useful if the workflow changes or model performance deteriorates. A documented fallback or simpler comparator can help the business reassess the deployment without rebuilding the original decision from memory during a period of operational pressure.

GAT’s SME automation article examines where automation is worth applying. Baseline discipline makes that question testable: the new system should improve a defined decision sufficiently to justify the work needed to operate it.
