Mukhammadsho Ganiev is a 17-year-old entrepreneur from Tajikistan and the Founder & CEO of EcoPass Tajikistan, a travel-tech initiative focused on sustainable tourism, digital engagement and supporting local tourism businesses.

His journey started with a simple question: how can technology make it easier for travellers to discover Tajikistan while creating more opportunities for local businesses and tourism communities?

That question developed into EcoPass Tajikistan, a web-based platform built around a digital EcoPass, QR-based engagement, EcoPoints and partner rewards.

Rather than starting with a large team or significant investment, Ganiev has focused on customer discovery, product development and partnership building. Today, EcoPass is moving from early product development toward real-world pilot validation with tourism partners in Tajikistan.

The operating foundation

Tajikistan has rich natural landscapes, cultural heritage and locally owned tourism experiences, but many smaller tourism businesses still have limited digital visibility.

At the same time, independent travellers increasingly expect information, services and local experiences to be accessible through digital platforms.

EcoPass Tajikistan is being developed to connect these two sides.

The platform combines a digital EcoPass with QR-based interactions, EcoPoints and partner rewards. The proposed experience allows travellers to interact with participating businesses and destinations, receive EcoPoints through confirmed visits and access rewards offered by participating partners.

For local tourism businesses, the longer-term goal is to provide greater digital visibility and a practical way to engage with travellers.

Ganiev has taken an evidence-led approach to building the platform. EcoPass has completed 32 customer discovery interviews and developed a working web-based progressive web app for early testing.

For him, one of the biggest lessons has been understanding that a startup idea must be validated with real customers before it can scale.

“What sounds good in a founder’s head is not necessarily what customers need.”

This approach has shaped EcoPass Tajikistan’s next phase: testing the platform in real tourism environments rather than simply adding more features.

Building regional relevance

Building a travel-tech startup in Tajikistan brings a different set of challenges compared with more established technology markets.

Specialist travel-tech infrastructure, startup networks and access to early-stage resources are still developing, which has required Ganiev to take on several roles at the same time, from customer discovery and product thinking to partnership development.

EcoPass has also started building partnerships that can support future field testing.

On 21 August 2026, EcoPass Tajikistan signed its first Memorandum of Understanding with the Canoe-Kayak Federation of the Republic of Tajikistan.

Ganiev has also participated in the eight-week Ilmhona Founders School, while EcoPass Tajikistan has been confirmed as a Web Summit Lisbon 2026 ALPHA & Impact Startup.

These milestones represent progress, but Ganiev is careful not to present them as proof that the EcoPass model has already succeeded.

For him, real validation will come from observing how travellers and tourism businesses use the platform in practice.

“For me, the real proof will come when we test EcoPass with tourism businesses and travellers in the field and can measure what actually happens.”

His age has also become part of his entrepreneurial journey. At 17, Ganiev sometimes needs to demonstrate his commitment before people focus on the project itself. His response has been to concentrate on execution, learning and consistent progress.

“The best response is not to argue about my age. It is to show the work.”

What comes next

EcoPass Tajikistan is now moving from customer discovery and product development toward real-world pilot validation.

The next phase will involve working directly with tourism partners, deploying QR-based EcoPass touchpoints and observing how travellers interact with the system.

The pilot is designed to answer several practical questions: whether travellers use the QR experience, whether EcoPoints and partner rewards create meaningful engagement, what value local businesses receive and which parts of the customer experience need to be simplified.

The findings will influence the next version of the product and help shape EcoPass Tajikistan’s future business model.

Ganiev’s long-term vision is to build EcoPass into a trusted digital layer connecting travellers, tourism businesses and destinations across Tajikistan.

However, he believes expansion should follow evidence rather than ambition alone.

“I would rather build something useful in one market than claim too early that we are going global.”

Central Asia could represent a longer-term opportunity, but Ganiev believes each market must be understood individually.

His approach reflects a broader perspective on entrepreneurship in emerging markets: technology should not simply copy models developed elsewhere. It needs to fit local infrastructure, business behaviour and customer needs.

“Technology can look perfect on a screen and still fail when it meets the real world.”

For Ganiev, the ambition may be significant, but the immediate priority remains deliberately focused: prove the model in Tajikistan first.

“I don’t want our map to grow faster than our evidence.”
